The values we live by
Philip's Top Ten Fitness Tips
Hydration
Start your day with water and keep drinking regularly throughout the day. Good hydration supports energy, concentration, training performance and recovery. Choose water most often and limit sugary or heavily carbonated drinks where possible.
Flexibility & Mobility
Spend a few minutes each day working on flexibility and mobility. Regular movement can help improve range of motion, support better exercise technique and make everyday movement feel easier.
Strength Training
Include strength training in your weekly routine. Building muscle and maintaining strength supports movement, bone health, confidence and long-term fitness, especially as we get older.
Breathing, Core & Control
Good movement is not only about effort. Controlled breathing, core stability and correct technique can improve how you move, train and perform. Focus on quality before speed.
Recovery
Recovery is part of training. Give your body enough time to rest, sleep well and recover between harder sessions. Progress comes from balancing training with appropriate recovery.
Nutrition & Sugar
Keep nutrition simple. Choose a balanced diet built around whole foods, protein, fruit, vegetables and suitable portions. Reduce unnecessary added sugar and use food to support your health and training.
Set Realistic Goals
Set goals that are realistic, measurable and achievable. Small improvements made consistently are more sustainable than trying to change everything at once.
Walking & Daily Movement
Regular daily movement matters. Walking is a simple way to stay active, support cardiovascular fitness and increase overall activity without making every session a hard workout.
Allow Room for Treats
A healthy lifestyle does not need to be perfect. Enjoy treats in moderation and focus on what you do consistently over time. A balanced approach is easier to maintain long term.
Consistency Over Perfection
Missing one session or having an off day does not undo your progress. Return to your routine as soon as you can and avoid letting one missed day become several. Consistency matters more than perfection.
FITNESS OVER 40, TOP FIVE TIPS
Train Smarter. Stay Stronger.
Fitness after 40 is about building strength, maintaining mobility and training in a way that supports long-term health and confidence.
Prioritise Strength
Strength training helps maintain muscle, support bone health and make everyday movement easier. Focus on good technique and gradual progression rather than simply lifting heavier.
Keep Moving Well
Mobility and flexibility become increasingly important as we get older. Regular controlled movement can help maintain range of motion and improve how your body moves during training and daily life.
Build Fitness Gradually
You do not need extreme workouts to make progress. Build cardiovascular fitness steadily and choose training that suits your current ability, experience and goals.
Respect Recovery
Recovery matters just as much as training. Give your body enough time to rest, sleep well and recover between harder sessions so you can train consistently.
Stay Consistent
Long-term results come from regular training rather than short bursts of extreme effort. A realistic routine that you can maintain will usually deliver better results over time.

These core principles help explain what makes a training programme effective, sustainable and suited to the individual.

September is the perfect time to reset routines and put personal wellbeing back on the agenda. PH Fitness focuses on realistic, sustainable progress through structured training, accountability and individual support, helping people build confidence, consistency and a healthier weekly rhythm.

PH-FITNESS takes on an epic two-lap challenge through the Slieve Bloom Mountains in aid of Dogs Trust Ireland. Covering approximately 160 km with almost 3,000 metres of climbing and eight major climbs, the ride will test endurance, strength and determination across some of Ireland’s toughest roads.
The second lap will also pay tribute to cycling legends Eddy Merckx, Sean Kelly, Francesco Moser and Freddy Maertens, with Phil wearing iconic jerseys associated with each rider. A demanding day in the saddle, driven by a lifelong love of road cycling and one very important cause.

Pilates offers a steady, structured approach to fitness that focuses on controlled movement, breathing, posture, balance, flexibility and core strength. For people who feel nervous about starting or returning to exercise, Pilates can provide an accessible way to build confidence, improve body awareness and develop lasting movement habits without the pressure of extreme training.
PUTTING THE TIPS INTO PRACTICE
Three Exercise Tips From PH Fitness
Good training is not simply about doing more. Technique, control and movement quality all matter. Here are three practical examples from training at PH Fitness.

Squat Depth & Control
Do not chase depth at the expense of control. Work within a range where you can maintain position, balance and good movement quality.
A controlled squat should feel deliberate from the start of the movement through to the return to standing. Build the range gradually as your strength, mobility and confidence improve.

Mobility Under Load
Mobility is not simply about stretching. Learning to control your body through a useful range of movement can help improve stability, strength and overall movement quality.
A light kettlebell can add resistance while encouraging controlled movement. The aim is not to force the position, but to work gradually within a range that you can control.

Set-Up Before You Lift
Good technique starts before the weight leaves the floor. Take time to establish your stance, grip and body position before beginning the lift.
Rushing the set-up can make the movement harder than it needs to be. Create tension, stay controlled and let good positioning support the exercise from the first repetition.
