I am a romantic and organic cyclist, the type who doesn’t want technology to dictate my mood. I prefer not to alter my intuition. “I’d like to be even more pure,” and I do feel blessed to have seen (when it happened) the greatest sportsmen Ireland ever produced. Sean Kelly (the Cannibal) & Stephen Roche (Giro, TDF & World road champion ‘87) were in all their cycling glory. Both men competed against the best in the world on a weekly basis. They not only won but raised the bar so high only the best could follow…. and routinely were beaten to the finish line.
“Now we are really overrun by the numbers, by the data. The Garmin [watch] tells you how the previous night’s training was, how you should feel. I tried [to use them] but I said immediately I didn’t need it.” Do I sleep with his smartwatch? “Absolutely not. I did and then it turned out I was really missing the feeling of understanding and reading my feelings. Slowly you go towards it deciding how you feel. It dictates how you should improve and what you should do that day. Honestly, I don’t need this. All these tools help you do your job better than in the past. However, you also have to think less. They are not going to help you keep the ability to know and listen to yourself. You will struggle to understand your body, your reaction to training, nutrition, and supplementation. They affect everything that happens in a training or sportive situation.”
I am 57 years old this March. I don’t need numbers anymore regarding my training. Love of cycling keeps me going. Getting fitter, stronger and being more ‘core training orientated’ in the gym will always take me to my next level of performance!
My gym programmes offer my clients access to next level performance routines. These routines will elevate anyone’s ability from where it is to where it should be. It will also elevate where it can be.
