Cycling is In My Blood

Cycling is in my blood, it's in my DNA and in my family! Having raced my bike at the highest amateur level as an ‘A’ rider for two years in my late teens / early twenties I can put my hand on my heart and say without contradiction ‘Cycling is my passion, my life, and my obsession.

Hi…my name is Phil, I’m a personal trainer, a Pilates instructor, a Flexibility & Mobility coach and…. a Cyclist! I will keep you up with all cycling news, and help you in discovering the world of cycling!!

Cycling is in my blood, it’s in my DNA and in my family! Having raced my bike at the highest amateur level as an ‘A’ rider for two years in my late teens; early twenties I can put my hand on my heart and say without contradiction ‘Cycling is my passion, my life, and my obsession. For anyone discovering cycling, keep reading for the latest cycling news.

Cycling is the greatest sport in the world. The demands on the racer are unparalleled. The time, the financial investment in bikes and components / wheels, the diet restrictions, the all-consuming effort involved in training at the level of the elite cyclist is mind blowing…yet many with the ability and love of the bike embrace and accept the way of life as it is. Incredibly hard with little reward…yet beautiful, afterall this is what makes cycling so fascinatingly newsworthy drawing many to explore the world of cycling.

How could I possibly speak about cycling without mentioning the cannibal…Sean Kelly, the king of the classics. My boyhood hero. My example in life and work. A man of few words. The greatest classics rider of all time. Kelly was a man for all seasons. He won practically everything worth winning without a team to match his ability. In other words, he had no worthwhile assistance from his teams…yet he won and won and won. He knew how to suffer on his bike therefore he was capable of winning on any road and was often at the center of Irish cycling highlights during his career.

We will never see his like again. Kelly was revered and respected by all his contemporaries / rivals. Kelly was the world’s no. 1 professional rider for 10yrs in a row. The first four of those years Kelly was unbeatable. Learning about him is part of discovering the world of cycling.

“I am true believer in cycling, in sport and after all these years, myself.”

Kelly’s victories on the roads of northern Europe and my own efforts to emulate the cannibal made me a ‘true believer’ in the wonderful world of competitive cycling.

A true believer is something to be, especially as you follow cycling with dedication, discovering new aspects with each ride! Fausto Coppi ‘il Campionissimo’ one of the greatest cyclists ever to grace a bike, famously once said “anyone who asks what sacrifices I must make to become a champion is not worthy to become a champion”. As a result it’s these sacrifices that often make cycling news worth following, especially for those discovering the beauty of this sport.

Safe cycling to all,

Phil

Avoiding Burnout

BURNOUT

I’ve experienced burnout — exhaustion, brain fog, and running on autopilot — even when everything seemed “fine” on the outside. Fitness isn’t just about appearance; it’s about feeling strong, moving well, and coping when life gets tough. Small, practical habits and guided personal training help rebuild strength, clarity, and confidence, keeping you grounded and in control again.
